Jessica is a Michigan Native originally born in Detroit, MI and grew up in Westland, MI. She is now a makeup artist and owns her own business where she specializes in being a body coach, writer, and a choreographer.
We sat down with Jessica to discuss some of her hardships, mantras, and ultimately, what it means to be a “smart girl” to her.
What has life taught you?
Life has taught me that it’s always evolving. It’s never too late to start over, try again, or change. Life won’t stay the same. And so we should do our best to enjoy it, grow with it, learn from it and do all things with love.
What would be your advice to young girls that might be struggling right now, whether it be financially, academically, or even both?
When I was younger, and even sometimes now, I thought that everything was black and white, all or nothing. What I have learned through living is that there is a lot of gray. It can feel like we need to choose plan A or B and we will stew over it and try and figure out things which we don’t have enough information to figure out. Life will almost always bring a plan C, which we never considered or thought possible. Possibility is endless if we can learn to trust our instincts and value our judgment, sometimes we just aren’t meant to figure it out, but rather have faith in our self that when the right option comes along we will know, and if we choose the wrong one, our heart will tell us so, and it’s never too late to start over.
What do you do to overcome some of life’s obstacles?
I have always been tenacious in the pursuit of things which mattered to me. I was never afraid to leap. But sometimes I wanted something so badly. I would force it to happen. I have found that some of the best things that have ever happened to me, have been easy, effortless, and have just somewhat fallen in my lap. If I push too hard for things to be my way, it’s not always the best way. I think not getting to attached to the outcome of things but instead trying to see the bigger picture has helped me put obstacles in perspective.
What makes a ‘Smart Girl’ to you?
A smart girl is someone who has taken the time to figure out who she really is. It’s someone who knows what she has to offer and believes in the power of her gifts. A smart girl listens to her intuition. A smart girl focuses on what she wants and doesn’t let others opinions of her or her ideas affect her. A smart girl shines with love and understanding of her very own soul.
Do you anything else you would like anybody to know?
I’m a huge advocate for body positivity and teaching others how to nourish the relationship we have with our bodies. Our society has some terrible messages about women’s worth in connection with their physical image. I want to spread love, hope, and awareness to teach women new avenues for appreciating and valuing their bodies and self-worth right now.
