Morgan Williamson is a Michigan native originally from the Metro Detroit Area.
Morgan has recently graduated from Michigan State University (2019) with a Bachelor’s degree in Finance.
While in college Morgan held multiple leadership positions, including being on the executive board of a community service group at MSU. She was also a mentor all while working in between classes and holding internships over the summer, one namely being at Mercedes Benz Financial.
Upon her completion at MSU, Morgan now works for Constellation Brands as a price coordinator in Chicago, Illinois.
We sat down with Morgan to have a chat with her about her trials, tribulations, mantras, strong points, and what it means to be a “smart girl” to her.
So you’ve been out of college for a little bit now, working in Chicago, Illinois tell me what’s it like making that big jump from full-time student to full-time adult?
It’s been challenging. Going from being a student where my worries were just doing homework and going to club meetings versus now trying to learn how to work with others and communicate in a more professional atmosphere, has been the biggest adjustment.
What advice would you have for young girls and girls your age who are looking to get their foot in the door no matter what occupation? How should they utilize their resources?
I think one thing that’s been helpful for me is to not be afraid to reach out to other alumni or people in your industry of interest for advice, job opportunities, etc. Anything really. Advice would be to be persistent and build genuine connections with people.
What is one of the most valuable lessons that you have learned so far since graduating from Michigan State University?
Valuable lesson…. Make a plan but it’s okay to deviate from it. I planned a lot of things that I wanted to accomplish post-grad and some of them worked out and others didn’t but having a compass was helpful at some point.
What do you do to overcome life’s obstacles?
From what I’ve experienced to this point I think to ask for help. Also just understand that tough things happen but they don’t remain.”
What do you ultimately want to be when you grow up?
If I never had to go back to school again [laughs] I’d be a vet. But if I stayed in the business field I would love to work in philanthropy or a sports organization.
What has life taught you?
I think life has taught me that nothing can be planned and it’s just a little unexpected, you just have to go with the flow. And try to just enjoy as much as you can.
How have you been dealing with coping through this pandemic and what advice would you give to those trying to get through as well?
If it’s work-related, I have been trying to establish boundaries working from home. If it’s personal, then establishing schedules and creating activities or trying to go outside and experience different activities that I can do. I’ve been trying new sports like snowboarding or pilates because they’re a little more socially distanced and lots of reading.”
What makes a ‘Smart Girl’ to you?
I think a smart girl is someone who’s constantly learns about the world around them. But for me that means anything for politics to sports to food. I think it’s just important to be able to speak to a variety of topics.
